I have a strange fascination with symbology and wings especially but for years I never incorporated them into my more 'serious' and 'traditional' art because I was worried it would be ridiculed as to cartoony. My love of anime and manga style art work was a constant source of bullying so looking to 'cartoony' was always a constant fear. I actually feel rather vindicated that anime and manga has become such a huge thing these days. The companion pieces Angel and Devil where some of my early attempts at finding a middle ground, a bridge, between what was considered 'traditional' and the more simplistic and symbolic styles I was seeing in my favorite shows and books.

Dead Man Dead Man Starring Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer Fan Art Poster 2006 http://ryuyujin.deviantart.com/art/Dead-Man-47624694 |
I do not do fan art often (unless its a commission) and of my charcoal works, this was probably one of my most ambitious. When I create fan art, I research the show, movie or book extensively in order to insure I capture the essence of it and the heart that speaks to me. Dead Man was actually originally a school assignment. I had always loved the poetry of William Blake, its speaks to the whimsically morbid motifs charcoal draws out of me. So I took the assignment personally. I watched and rematched the movie multiple times, researched the original screenplay, production notes, others' interpretations, the history behind the symbology and metaphors, and made dozens and dozens of quick sketches, studies as I plotted out and planned the composition which had to by symbolic in of itself. The only thing I got upset about was the teacher insisted I add the title in that horribly stencil text. I thought it stood on its own great without the title being any where in the drawing.

Envy Advanced Drawing 2005 http://ryuyujin.deviantart.com/art/Envy-53250334 |
I was also studying very heavily cubism, graphic design, and artists such as Paul Klee. You can see the influence in a lot of my later works. Some o the first pieces were extremely clunky though. I would like to some day resist them and try them in a different medium to get a cleaner, crisper look. Music has also always influenced my work and my college days were when I was first discovering heavy rock, alternative and metal. Envy was inspired by the band Disturbed.
So just one more installation and then the Five Nights of Charcoal will be concluded for this year. Till tomorrow night!
