ScabsAdvanced Drawing 2006http://fav.me/dvpf1e |
Even though more a sketch then actual finished piece, Scabs is a favorite and the first time I drew my muse as anything dark dark. Again it was also an attempt to mix the simplified anime inspired wing symbols I liked and 'traditional', 'serious' styles of charcoal drawing. Inspired by Rosenrot by Rammstein.

Some of my favorite body parts to draw besides nose, chins and collarbones are feet and legs. I had a friend in collage karate class, whom I jokingly knick named "The Little Blonde Imp From Hell", who, even though she was not that interested in my art, I think knew I liked drawing feet and would shove her knife like overly flexible size 6 (shoe size may be wrong but they LOOKED that small) baby feet in my face during warm ups and stretches and just grin like a cheshire cat and go "Arn't my feet so pretty?". This normally resulted in me shoving her over, putting her in a head lock or other wise doing something that would cause the sensei to turn around and scold us both.
Sensei, glaring and trying to hide the smirk tugging at his lips, "Jennifer! Julia! What is rule number eleven?!"
Us in chorus, "Be kind and courteous to your fellow student."
Sensei turns back around and we're trying to suplex each other into the ground.
Yes, these are her feet.
Relaxed in Blue was an early Oil Painting version but a different model who had gorgeous swimmer's legs.

I Want to Fly Advanced Drawing 2006 http://ryuyujin.deviantart.com/art/I-want-to-fly-I-56145151 |
My only Religious inspired charcoal drawing and the number one seller as a print. Its a special piece inspired by a dancer and would be ballerina I knew in college. She was amazing in both her skill and her big heart. I've always had a soft spot for dance and theater even though I rather suck at it. Didn't stop me from taking classes with her and my adopted sister Almalthia . As soul wrenchingly mentally and emotionally taxing as those classes were, they helped me greatly in both my writing and art to understand the emotions of my characters and models and thus convey them in words and art better and more realistically and naturally. It was also a time that helped me learn a thing or two about my own emotions and where the morbidity, darkness, whimsy and aggression that colored my art came from.
I did find out I play villains, especially completely broken and yet sympathetic psycho types best.

Hands Personal Piece http://fav.me/d327hr0 |
Hands can be just as fun as feet and are far more emotive. My baby brother, with much protesting, was the model for these. He is three years younger and yet a full foot taller. All the men from mom's side of the family are super tall. Most of the women too. The tall genes skipped me though and I took after my short but awesomely sassy grandmother on my dad's side. Genetics are so much fun. I studied biology and genetics heavily through high school and early college. I wanted to become a pediatrician specializing in genetics. I was good at science and all my life people kept telling me you can't make a living with art at all. Why I tried to make a career of genetics first. Unforeseen circumstances and crappy academic politics blew that all up in my face. However, even if I did not inherit the hight from my mom's side of the family, I did inherit the stubbornness and sheer force of will. Combine that with grandma Riddle's sassy and a natural passive aggressive streak, I will some day prove the nay sayers wrong and White Noise Graphics will be a thriving, successful business.
The original version of Hands before it was adjusted and edited for prints, calendars, t-shirts, mugs and such:

Well thats the end of this year's Five Nights of Charcoal. I'm a little disappointed I haven't gotten much feed back and especially suggestions for new charcoal works I could do for next year. But I did enjoy revisiting theses old works and sharing stories about them with you all. If any of the stories made you smile or laugh, then the mission of Five Nights was still accomplished.
Here is hoping you all have/had a safe and wonderful Halloween!
