There is something special coming for Halloween weekend. So we are starting a count down to it with revisits of past creepy artwork, all ladies with a dark and/or twisted side to them or story around them or a connection to the comic book world.
So sit back, put on some spooky music, and enjoy the tales we nostalgic and scary visual tales we weave!
I hope to hear a few of your own or your own interpretations of these artworks in the comments!
Starting things off with Stellar Jay's Night Out. A part of my Birds of a Feather collection/series from 2008. Each piece featured a woman who, at the time, had a huge impact on my life and art, and an Alaskan bird that closely represented them in my mind.
Night Out features Katie Behnke, photographer, lover of spiders and octopuses, connoisseur of theater and mythological history, and self proclaimed Hells Bella.
There has always been a 'Katie' or 'Katherine' in every major stage of my life. Each has left their mark. Behnke was the third and the one who woke up a competitive art spirit in me I didn't have before.
Steller's Jays are said to be tricksters who work with the coyote and fox. An untrustworthy fellow indeed. But, they are also said to represent a "message of hope in disrepair and the will to live. The jay is willing to teach you fearlessness, adaptability and survival but you must be willing to follow its lead.” In addition, a group of jays can be called a 'band', 'cast', 'party', or 'scold' of jays.
Paired together with the third Katie, the image portrays a contemplative femme fatale caught between classical and modern days. A dark mistress with a soft spot for animals.
