Five Nights of Charcoal - The 1st Night

Starting tonight I will be showcasing my old but still awesome charcoal pieces, at least 3 or 4 a night, on my various social media sites for 5 days, ending Halloween night.

Critiques, comments, suggestions, thoughts and especially ideas for new charcoal drawings I could do for next year are and will be always welcome!

1)
Print Lab
Experimental Drawing Class 2004http://ryuyujin.deviantart.com/art/Print-Lab-7656453

Sadly my old camera from back then does not do the image justice and I no longer have the original. This art was used as a background image by the awesome AngelsTale back in 2004 and spawned a pretty cool character, Ryu Masaki, to boot! Go give AngelsTale and her great characters love!

Open Canvas
Leather, Hide & Skin (LHS) Project
Experimental Drawing 2004http://ryuyujin.deviantart.com/art/LHS-Open-Canvas-7680629

A mixed media piece but mostly charcoal. Part of a four piece political project addressing body and body image issues in teenage/collage age girls. Open Canvas is my favorite of the four pieces and the only one to survive a flood that destroyed the other three. Photos of all four can be seen here however: http://ryuyujin.deviantart.com/gallery/181366/LSH-Project

3)
The Bone King
Experimental Drawing 2003/2004http://ryuyujin.deviantart.com/art/The-Bone-King-15973441

The first time I dipped into the darker, more morbid (and sometimes whimsical) side of my creative juices. There is a fairy tale like story with this one I am saving for another day. But my old art teacher in college thought it looked enough like H.R. Giger's works to make me watch ALL the Aliens movies out at the time and do a full research paper on the guy. I was still easily creeped out back then and did not sleep hardly at all the entire week I was working on the report.

4)
Checkered Bones
Advanced Drawing 2004http://ryuyujin.deviantart.com/art/Checkered-Bones-15973747

One of the first times I mixed chalk pastel with traditional charcoal. Its a favorite of mine I'd like to revisit some day. It was also pave the way for another charcoal drawing of mine that I will feature in a later Five Nights of Charcoal feature.

Thats it for tonight! See you all tomorrow night!
